How To Post to the BlueBroward Blog

Every BlueBroward member is invited to share opinions, criticisms, candidate endorsements, and tips for more effective organizing on the BlueBroward Community Blog, either regularly or occasionally. I reserve the right to edit or delete postings at my own discretion, but my goal is to encourage discussion, not to be a censor.

Posting a blog is really no more complicated than writing an email, but there are still a few things to learn if you have never done it before. So here are a few tips to get you oriented.

When you first log in, the welcome screen or “Dashboard” shows links to the screens for common tasks, including posting a blog. The “Posts” menu on the left hand side of the screen also gives options for adding new entries or editing existing blog entries. (You will only be able to edit ones that you have posted, although you can respond to other members’ blog entries in the comments section).

Ron Klein: Keep West off the podium and in the audience

Filed under: Opinion — David F. Carr @ 10:02 pm

Reposting this, from Congress Ron Klein, because I think it’s really important that we win this race.

Dear David,

Make no mistake: my opponent isn’t simply attempting to bring his radical and dangerous views to Congress – he’s attempting to make himself a national figure and leader of the Republican party.

With the recent announcement that 2012 GOP Convention will be in Florida, the Washington Post suggested that Allen West could be a potential keynote speaker. The National Republican Congressional Committee is already supporting West, a self-declared “right-wing extremist.”

This the same person who has said, “I hate big-tent. I hate inclusiveness. And I hate outreach.” He has literally encouraged physical intimidation as a political tactic – saying this to supporters about me: “You’ve got to make the fellow scared to come out of his house.”

Help us make sure that the only seat Allen West gets at the convention is in the audience.

Reject West’s Tea-Party, Palin-esque politics – Donate to our campaign today!

It’s often the case that elections are between two people with essentially similar views… the differences in the margins of issues. This isn’t one of those races.

Allen West and I couldn’t be more different. This is truly a race that divides on tremendous ideological ground. He may make for great TV – but West’s positions are simply dangerous for our health as a country and our standing around the world.

Donate today – and send a message to the GOP that West is a tremendous boost – for Democrats.

Thank you as always for your support,

Congressman Ron Klein

How to Post and Maintain Club Listings

This is an update for Democratic club presidents and other people who hold official or unofficial meetings in support of the Democratic cause on a regular basis.

When an organization registers with BlueBroward, I create an event template that includes the name of the organization and boilerplate details like the regular meeting schedule and meeting place. This doesn’t stop you from posting events on a different schedule, or a different place, but my intention is to make it easy to confirm a regularly scheduled meeting and add details as necessary. (If you need me to create a template or update a club template, please contact me at david@bluebroward.org as right now I don’t have it set up so you can do that yourself.)

In this example, I’m logged in as Larry Wanderman, one of the leaders of the Wyndmoor Democratic Club. The “Dashboard” of options that welcomes me is displaying options that are available to all BlueBroward members (such as the ability to post blog entries). But it also includes a section specific to the Wyndmoor club.

Formerly Known as the Tamarac Democratic Club

Filed under: Broward Democratic Party (DEC),Opinion — David F. Carr @ 10:33 pm

An insider controversy over the decertification of the Tamarac Democratic Club has broken into the media. The question is whether Mitch Caesar, chair of the Broward Democratic Party, acted because of egregious violations by the club or because of personal grudge against Patty Lynn, who had been elected president of the club (in an election Caesar has challenged as illegal).

From Bob Norman at the New Times, you can read an account titled Down With Ceasar. As you can tell from the headline, he is skeptical of the accusations made by Mitch Caesar and sympathetic to the appeal by the Tamarac Democratic Club (a.k.a., the organization formerly known as …)

From BrowardBeat.com, an account more critical of the club by Buddy Nevins (formerly the Sun-Sentinel political columnist):  Tamarac Democratic Club Killed By State Party

Attorney Randy Fleisher is representing the Tamarac club and has field a grievance addressed to the Broward Democratic Executive Committee, the Florida Democratic Party, and the Judicial Council.

BlueBroward.org website update and sponsorship opportunity

Filed under: BlueBroward News — David F. Carr @ 7:03 pm
Your Business HereWhat a great Democrat I am for supporting BlueBroward.org

The BlueBroward website (http://www.bluebroward.org) has just been reorganized and redesigned to get in fighting shape for the 2010 elections. You should find that it is easier to post events and share your opinions on the community blog because it’s all managed with the same password, and through the same online “dashboard.” I know that many of you are very opinionated, and I’d love to see more of you taking advantage of the opportunity to post your thoughts and candidate endorsements to the blog.

Or, if you see something good someone else posted to the blog, or an event you would like to share with your friends, consider posting the link to Facebook or Twitter or whatever other online communities you participate in.

For most members, your username is your email address (the address at which you are receiving this message). If you don’t remember your password, you can reset it via email.

Sponsorship Opportunity

Contact me if you have a business interested in sponsoring BlueBroward.org email broadcasts to the tune of $500 per year in return for Google-style text advertisement with a link and a short description that would be included with the regular Sunday roundup of events. BlueBroward is not organized as a non-profit, so the sponsorship would not be tax deductible. But this would allow me to cover the expense of moving to the MailChimp email list management service, plus some other expenses.

I’m sending you this message using the MailChimp service because they offer a free account for small lists, but BlueBroward won’t be eligible for much longer. This is the service I’ve been using with most of the commercial clients and campaigns I work with. It will allow me to do a better job of managing unsubscribes and spam complaints.

This sponsorship opportunity is for just one business or other organization (not a political campaign). I reserve the right to determine which sponsorship offers are most appropriate for this community. Email me back if interested.

Revamping BlueBroward.org

I will probably announce this in a bigger way later in the week, after a little more shakedown testing, but BlueBroward.org has just gotten a technical overhaul. It now runs on the WordPress blogging platform, but with my customizations layered on top.

As I said, I’m still testing it out, so let me know if you run into something that doesn’t work properly.

I’m hoping this will prove better in many ways, particularly in terms of being easier to use for people who post events frequently, such as Democratic club officers. Also, by having one common “dashboard” or control panel for both blogging and event management, I’m hoping to encourage more people to share their thoughts on the  community blog. There was a flurry of activity here around healthcare reform a few months ago, but the integration I had at that point between the blog and the rest of the website was kind of clumsy. I don’t think most people even knew it was there. (more…)

Facebook and My Secret Identity

Filed under: Internet Strategy — David F. Carr @ 11:25 pm

Recently, I’ve been exploring the tools Facebook provides for posting notes and links to only a subset of the people I’m connected with on the service. I knew there was supposed to be a way to do it, but it took me a while to figure out how — even as a supposedly tech-savvy guy. So I thought others might find this useful.

The secret identity I’m trying to protect is not so secret to BlueBroward people: my identity as a partisan Democrat. And it’s not much of a secret from anyone motivated to do a minor amount of digging or backgrounding on me. Still, there are old high school friends and former colleagues I have reconnected through Facebook who might not care for my politics, not to mention potential employers and potential customers for my consulting business whose politics I don’t know and who I don’t necessarily want to know mine. Or, at least, I don’t need to go out of my way to be “in their face” with my political views.

To some extent, I’ve told professional contacts that I stick to “just business” topics on LinkedIn, and they shouldn’t connect with me on Facebook if they don’t want to hear about my politics. But it’s hard to set rigid boundaries. Also, some of the local political issues that I write about on Facebook are pretty irrelevant to writers, editors, and tech people I know in New York and California.

For some time now, I’ve been trying to tag new contacts as belonging to one or more of a few categories — personal, professional or Lyman Hall (those high school folks from Connecticut). You can do this when you add a new contact, like this:

Adding a new contact to a group

I can either choose an existing group or type in the name of a new group I want to create. These groups are just labels for types of Facebook friends within my larger contact list.

I haven’t done this as consistently as I might have, and wasn’t doing it at all when I first joined Facebook. So I also had to go back and do it retroactively by choosing the “Edit Friends” off the Account menu –

Edit Friends

Edit Friends

– and then categorizing individual contacts.

Assigning Friends to Groups

Assigning Friends to Groups

Now, when posting a status update or link, I can click on the lock icon to get options for restricting the item’s distribution. I then select “Customize” off the list.

Restricting to a Custom List

Restricting to a Custom List

Within the customize options you want to restrict to “Specific People”

Share with Specific People

Share with Specific People

At this point, I could type in a list of people’s names. But what I’m going to do instead is use the group keyword for my political friends.

Share with a Group

Share with a Group

Notice that I could make this my default setting. But no, there are plenty of other links I share that are not political. And sometimes I may want to share a political point even with those who might not agree with me (I just want to be able to pick my battles).

Once I click “Save Settings,” I am returned to my home screen, where I can post this my message by clicking the “Share” button. But now, instead of being shared with everyone, the item should only be displayed to the people on my “political” list.
