Standing Room Only at Congressman Klein’s Kickoff

This was good to see, an overflow crowd of supporters coming out to cheer on Congressman Ron Klein as he officially kicked off his 2010 re-election campaign. The event at the new Broward campaign headquarters, 623 North Federal Highway, Pompano Beach (Map), followed two other kickoff events at the parts of his district that reach up into Palm Beach County.

How to Post Events to the Calendar (RSVPs Optional)

These are general instructions on posting an event. Any member can post events to the BlueBroward Calendar. There are a few extra options available for members who are registered to edit the events for a Democratic Club or other organization that holds regular meetings (see How to Post and Maintain Club Listings). But these general instructions also apply to them.

Note to Organizing for America members: If you post your event to my.barackobama.com, it will automatically turn up on BlueBroward. A script that runs every morning looks up events by zip code and enters those in our region to the BlueBroward Calendar, along with a link to the RSVP page on the OFA website. So if you also add it here, it will wind up being listed twice.

Links to the screens for posting blog entries, events, and campaign listings are displayed on the main “Dashboard” that welcomes you after you log in.

Member Posting Options on Dashboard

Click “Post an Event” to display the event editor screen. Here, you can set date and time, the headline for your event, and a description.

Headlines should include the name of the organization or campaign. Descriptions should include directions to the event location and contact information for someone who can answer questions about the event.

How to Share/Delegate Editing Rights for a Campaign, Club, or Organization

BlueBroward allows officers and representatives of Democratic clubs, allied groups, and campaigns to appoint multiple editors for their event listings and related information. For example, both the president and the secretary of a club could have editing rights on this system. A candidate might create a campaign profile but then allow a campaign manager to also update the campaign profile and post campaign-related events. For a campaign, this includes rights to edit the campaign profile listed on our campaigns page, as well as any campaign events.

This can be useful as a way to hand off responsibilities when people come and go, or for people to back each other up when someone is on vacation or tied up with other responsibilities.

Ron Klein vs. Allen West: What We’re Up Against

Filed under: Campaign News — Tags: — David F. Carr @ 1:49 pm

Congressman Klein will face one of the toughest Tea Party Republican challenges this year, so please make every effort to support him.

For background on what we’re up against, see the Broward New Times article, For Allen West, “War Hero” Is in Eye of the Beholder and the Sun Sentinel’s assessment from a few months ago Ron Klein faces tough challenge from Allen West, and this video of West addressing a Tea Party rally.

West is getting support from the likes of Sarah Palin, and from voters who think it’s a good thing that he was brought up on charges for prisoner abuse as an Army officer. We can’t afford to lose any of our good Democratic legislators, but we particularly can’t afford to lose to this guy.

To find out how you can help, contact volunteer coordiantor Anthony Morse by June 10, amorse@ronkleinforcongress.com or 561-995-9626 or visit www.ronkleinforcongress.com

Our Successful Weekend and Other Items

Filed under: Campaign News,Opinion — Alan Ehrlich @ 8:43 pm

I just took action on an issue that I consider very important.  I have (again) asked Governor Crist to veto HB 1143 – a bill that will drastically undermine women’s privacy rights and access to reproductive healthcare.  Please call his office at (850) 488-4441 or (850) 488-7146 or send him an email at charlie.crist@myflorida.com and ask him to veto HB 1143.

We had a very successful weekend of canvassing for Organizing for America in Plantation.  We knocked on over 300 doors, had mostly enthusiastic responses, collected dozens of commitments from neighbors that they will vote again this year.  Many thanks to Ralph Rickel for helping to plan and organize this event, and to canvassers Don Borim, Susan and Robert Mencia, Debra and Ron Edouard, Felicia Grey, Jessica Ryner, Kitty Gearhart, John Ziegler, Janet Thompson, and Errol Brown.

I still have maps and lists of our targeted voters (people who voted for the first time in 2008) in Plantation.  So let me know if you’d like to volunteer a few hours next weekend or the weekend after that, and I’ll set you up.

Another item:

My friend and fellow ACLU Board member Barry Butin would like to have an organizational meeting about setting up a mass protest against BP and its oil spill at a time and location to be discussed.  Barry says that “While many valuable protests, comments, and discussions are held on the internet, I believe we should be out there in droves to protest BP’s arrogance and incompetence.”  Please call or send your thoughts about organizing such an event to Barry Butin at 954-217-6916 or bbcrimdef@aol.com.

2010 BlueBroward.org Membership Drive

Filed under: Opinion — David F. Carr @ 11:58 pm

Please tell your friends about BlueBroward.org and why they should join. Tell them about the Calendar, the Community Blog, and the Campaign Listings, and tell them we need more activists and more campaigns registered and participating in this online community for the 2010 campaign cycle.

Or tell me I’m all wet, if you don’t really believe those things. But I’m hoping enough of you will see the value in what BlueBroward represents to encourage your friends to sign up. BlueBroward’s continuing mission is to grassroots provide organizing tools for Democratic activists and campaigns in Broward. Nothing more, nothing less.

All that’s required for registration is an email address. Oh, and you have to solve one of those “type the hidden message” riddles to prove you’re a real person and not a spam robot (sorry, but those robots are a pain).

See the how to category on the blog for guidelines on how to post events, campaign listings, and blog entries.

Thanks!
