Marleine Bastien is the founder, former president, and current Executive Director of Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami, Inc. (Haitian Women of Miami). Marleine Bastien is considered a true leader in the Haitian community of South Florida. A passionate and articulate spokesperson for Haitians, she formed the "Justice Coalition for the Haitian Children of Guantanamo" to advocate for Haitian children incarcerated there in the early 1990s, and also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show to lend her expertise to a discussion of the devastating effect that prolonged detention at Guantanamo had on Haitian children.

I served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000-2006. Prior to that, I served as a General Magistrate for the Miami-Dade County Value Adjustment Board. In 1994, Pres. Bill Clinton appointed me to the steering committee of the Summit of the Americas. While serving in a Republican dominated Legislature with Jeb Bush as Governor, I managed to get $2.3 million for the first clinic ever built in Little Haiti. I passed the Pride Enterprise bill, which allowed state prisoners to learn computer skills while doing time so that they can have a skill if they want to turn their lives around when they get out. I amended an anti-nepotism provision in a school reform bill that banned nepotism on the Miami-Dade County School board. I amended a bill by then State Representative Stacy Ritter, to allow immigrants with cases pending before Immigration Courts or USCIS to have drivers' licenses while their cases are pending. I'm also an attorney who has practiced law in Miami for the past 22 years.

Public education is this country's great equalizer - it gave rise to the greatest middle class in the world. Yet today, public education is under attack. Our students are leaving high school with very few, if any, employable skills; the public is tired of mis-spending and back room politics; and our neighborhood schools are in jeopardy.
My 23 year military career in the Navy Special Operations community laid the foundation for my run for the school board. I have always been involved in education. As a certified Navy Instructor I provided special operations training to both foreign and domestic military personnel of all four services. As I progressed through the ranks my experience, managerial skills, and leadership earned me a commission as a Naval Officer through the Navy’s Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program. As such I commanded a variety of special operations commands including research and development commands where I worked with contractors and foreign governments. My final command was a Pacific training command where I was responsible for personnel, curriculum, and fiscal management.
After retiring from the Navy, I continued my passion for education by becoming a Florida certified teacher through the Troops to Teachers program. I have taught in middle schools and high schools; core curriculum classes and elective classes as well as an alternative school. I know classrooms!
My years of experience as a classroom teacher, combined with my business experience as a naval officer make me the best choice for today’s school board.
