What a Great Day it Was!

    Good evening, friends!

    Yesterday (Wednesday) was an awesome day for rights restoration petition collection.  First, at the West Regional Courthouse, with the help of Lonnie Supnick, Ron McCoy, Paulo Ayrolla, and Penny Cukier, we registered 6 voters and collected 110 rights restoration petitions.  In addition, Penny and Paulo brought in 29 more petitions that they had collected on their own.  And then, in the evening, at the Islamic Foundation of South Florida’s dinner, I was able to collect another 41 petitions.  That’s 180 rights restoration petitions in one day!  If every day were like yesterday, we would have the number we need in no time.

     Here’s what’s going on:  This evening (Thursday), starting at 7 PM at the Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center at 3801 S. Pine Island Road in Davie, the Davie Democratic Club will be hosting the first general meeting of the Broward Chapter of the Democratic Environmental Caucus of Florida.  Speakers include Florida Representative Evan Jenne and Florida Senator Lauren Book.  Hope to see you there.

On Saturday, June 3rd, there are two events that I will attend  The first, the Orange Wear Celebration, is in Esplanade Park, 401 SW 2nd Street, in downtown Fort Lauderdale, sponsored by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense and other community partners, starts at 1 PM and is an event to raise gun violence awareness.  The second, starting at 5 PM at the Huizenga Plaza Park Bandshell, 1 E. Las Olas Blvd., is the March for Truth, sponsored by the ACLU, the Women’s March Broward Chapter, and other partners, to protect our democracy, fight for real criminal justice reform, and stand in solidarity with communities being targeted by Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump.   I will attend both events and collect as many rights restoration petitions as possible.  Please let me know if you will be able to join me at those events on that day.

    Also on Saturday, June 3rd, John Ziegler’s team will be back at the West Regional Library in Plantation from 10 AM to 6 PM to register voters and collect rights restoration petitions.  If you’d like to help at the Library in one of the 2-hour shifts, please contact John at 954-232-3918 or johnjoeziegler@aol.com.

    We will also be back at the West Regional Courthouse on Monday and Wednesday, June 5th and 7th, from 10 AM to 2 PM.  Yes, it will be hot, but we will have our shady canopy and don’t forget to bring water and a hat.  Please let me know if you will be able to join us on those days.

Can You Help Out During the Next Few Days?

    Happy Memorial Day, everybody!

    The Meeting of the Broward Young Black Progressives went very well.  My Co-Coordinator, Rod Kemp, and I talked about the Rights Restoration Amendment and solicited their help in this Campaign.  Those in attendance were very enthusiastic and took lots of petitions to get people to sign.

    Yesterday, Rod and I met with Katy Syed from the League of Women Voters and Mark Eckert from the ACLU.  Katy and Rod are going to try to establish teams to collect rights restoration petitions during the week at the Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  If you live close to downtown and would like to help with petition collection at the Main Courthouse, just let me know.

    We will be back at the West Regional Courthouse (Broward & Pine Island) on Wednesday, May 31st from 10 AM to 2 PM to register voters and collect rights restoration petitions.  Please let me or Ron McCoy (rmccoyohfl@gmail.com or 954-790-3106) know if you will be coming out to help.

Remember:  Volunteers can collect petitions from any registered voter in Florida, and all you have to do is return the completed petitions to me.  I am now a coordinator for the Rights Restoration Coalition in Broward County.  That means I have blank petition forms that you can use and t-shirts that you can wear.  You can collect petitions from Democrats and Republicans.  My pitch goes something like this:  “Have you signed the Rights Restoration Petition yet?  It would restore the right to vote to Floridians once they get out of prison.”

It’s Past Time to Give Back Their Right to Vote!

    Good afternoon, everybody!

    The response to our call to ramp up collection of rights restoration petitions so that we can put it on the 2018 ballot has been incredible.  But we cannot let up for even a minute.  If we hope to be able to vote for this amendment in 2018, we have to continue collecting at full speed!  So if you have not yet signed the petition, please do so immediately.  And if you have not yet asked everyone you know to sign it, please do that immediately too.  And please forward this message to all of your contacts.

    The West Regional Courthouse has been awesome again this week.  On Monday, with the help of Janet Thompson, Jane Schwartz, Paulo Ayrolla, and Lonnie Supnick, we were able to collect 2 voter registration forms, 3 vote-by-mail requests, and 94 rights restoration petitions.  And on Wednesday, Chris Gulla, Paulo Ayrolla, and Penny Cukier helped to collect 6 voter registration forms and 87 rights restoration petitions.  And Penny Cukier also brought in another 32 petitions that she collected on her own!

    That’s 213 petitions in just three days!  Just think about how many we can collect throughout Broward County with your help.

    Here is a link to the petition itself:  http://media.wix.com/ugd/3ecbf8_3ba4d6758f154f839954e38eb612b87a.pdf    I am also attaching a pdf of the petition.

    Here’s what else is going on:

        1.  Tonight I will attend the General Body Meeting of the Broward Young Black Progressives to talk about the Rights Restoration Amendment and solicit their help in this Campaign.

        2.  John Ziegler’s team will be back at the West Regional Library in Plantation on Saturday, May 27th from 10 AM to 6 PM to register voters and collect rights restoration petitions.  If you’d like to help at the Library in one of the 2-hour shifts, please contact John at 954-232-3918 or johnjoeziegler@aol.com.

        3.  We won’t be working on Memorial Day, next Monday, but we will be back at the West Regional Courthouse from 10 AM to 2 PM on Wednesday, May 31st.  Please let us know if you can join us on that day.

        4.  And on Saturday, June 3rd, there are two events that I will attend in Esplanade Park, 401 SW 2nd Street, in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  The first, the Orange Wear Celebration, sponsored by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense and other community partners, starts at 1 PM and is an event to raise gun violence awareness.  The second, starting at 5:30 PM, is the March for Truth, sponsored by Indivisible South Florida, Project Rise Up Activism Network, and other partners, calling for a fair and impartial investigation, for the pursuit of truth, and for the restoration of faith in our electoral system and in the Office of the Presidency.  I will attend both events and collect as many rights restoration petitions as possible.  Please let me know if you will be able to join me at those events on that day.

Do Republicans Know What Integrity Means?

    Good evening, everybody!

    Can you believe what Republican Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, said when asked about Trump asking FBI Director Comey to drop the inquiry into Michael Flynn?  He said:  “I think it would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House.”  LESS DRAMA?  The President of the United States appears to be guilty of obstruction of justice in an ongoing FBI investigation, and the top Republican in the Senate refers to it as drama!  I’m sorry, but it’s time for Republicans to learn about integrity and put the interests of the United States ahead of their petty political concerns!  It’s time to start talking about impeachment!

    Now that I’ve ranted about what is just the latest Trump bombshell, what I really want to talk about in this message is the Rights Restoration Petition.

    We had another few great days for voter registration and petition collection.  On Monday at the West Regional Courthouse, Ron McCoy, along with John Countryman, Paulo Ayrolla, Janet Thompson, and Lonnie Supnick, collected 5 voter registration forms (all Democrats!) and 49 rights restoration petitions!  And in addition to that, Paulo Ayrolla and John Countryman did some petition gathering on their own and collected another 25 petitions!  I will be back at the Courthouse on Monday and Wednesday, May 22nd and 24th, from 10 AM until 2 PM.  Please let me know if you can join us on either or both of those days.

    And then, at tonight’s (Tuesday’s) Broward Democratic Party Meeting, we collected or were given another 55 rights restoration petitions.  That makes 129 in just two days!  Not bad.

    Florida is one of only 3 states with a lifetime ban on voting by anyone with a prior felony conviction.  In Florida, there are over 1.5 million citizens who have thereby lost their right to vote.  The Voting Restoration Amendment would allow Floridians who’ve paid their debt to society to earn back their right to vote.  The Amendment does not apply to anyone convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense.  WE NEED YOUR HELP TO PUT THE AMENDMENT ON THE 2018 BALLOT!

    The name of the nonpartisan coalition spearheading this drive is Floridians for a Fair Democracy, and here is their website:  https://www.floridiansforafairdemocracy.com/

    The President of the Rights Restoration Coalition is Desmond Meade.  On May 10th, Desmond appeared on Samantha Bee’s show on TBS “Full Frontal” and exposed Florida dismal record of denying felons the right to vote.  Here is the link:  http://www.tbs.com/shows/full-frontal-with-samantha-bee.html  His interview is about half-way into the May 10th show.

    And here is a link to the petition itself:  http://media.wix.com/ugd/3ecbf8_3ba4d6758f154f839954e38eb612b87a.pdf    I am also attaching a pdf of the petition.

    Volunteers can collect petitions from any registered voter in Florida, and all you have to do is return the completed petitions to me.  I am now the official coordinator for the Rights Restoration Coalition in Broward County.

    Thank you for helping to put this Amendment on the 2018 Ballot!

One Shock After Another – Let’s Make Them Regret What They are Doing!

    Good afternoon, friends!      (As always, please let me know if you want me to unsubscribe you from this list.)

    Another great day at the West Regional Courthouse on Monday:  Ton McCoy and his team of inspired volunteers, John Countryman, Barbara O’ Keefe, Paulo Ayrolla, and Lonnie Supnick, collected 7 voter registration forms (6 Dems and one Ind) and 77 rights restoration petitions!  We will be out at the Courthouse again from 10 AM to 2 PM on Monday the 15th and Monday the 22nd.  Please let me or Ron (rmccoyohfl@gmail.com or 954-790-3106) know if you can come out and help.

    What 217 Republican congressman did last week was despicable!  Instead of working with Democrats to fix Obamacare’s problems, they passed, by the slimmest of margins, a bill that would replace the ACA with something that cannot reasonable be called health care coverage.  As Indivisible points out, Trumpcare would take health care away from 24 million Americans, increase deductible by and average of $1500, end protections for people with pre-existing conditions, let insurers charge older Americans a whole lot more for health care, cut $880 billion from Medicaid, put lifetime and annual benefit caps back on the table, make women pay more for health insurance than men, and defund Planned Parenthood.  And Trumpcare does all this to pay for $600 billion in tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations!

    Here’s the link if you want to see more:  https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/10-worst-things-trumpcare/?link_id=9&can_id=25a7eb103f45a2aca91b686fee884ae1&source=email-we-lost-a-battle-today-heres-how-we-win-the-war&email_referrer=we-lost-a-battle-today-heres-how-we-win-the-war&email_subject=we-lost-a-battle-today-heres-how-we-win-the-war

    35 of these Republican congressmen are in swing districts which can elect Democrats in 2018.  Let’s make each of these congressmen regret their misguided vote!  Make a donation today to an organization that will split the donation between each of the eventual Democratic nominees in these 35 swing districts:
        Swing Left:  https://medium.com/@swingleft/the-house-just-passed-trumpcare-make-them-regret-it-f88c2965054f
        ActBlue:  https://secure.actblue.com/

    And Trump’s firing yesterday of Jim Comey was equally despicable!  They made up a reason for firing Comey, but it makes no sense at all.  We all know that Trump’s anger and frustration over the investigation is the real reason for sacking the head of the FBI.  Trump wants to put an end to the investigation.  Here’s what you can do about that (Thanks to Indivisible’s Jewellene Wilson for these numbers):

    Call the Deputy Attorney General and demand a special prosecutor!  Department Comment Line: 202-353-1555; Department of Justice Main Switchboard: 202-514-2000;

    Call Senator Marco Rubio and demand an independent investigation!  305-418-8553 (Miami); 202-224-3041 (Washington, DC);

    Thank Senator Bill Nelson for calling for an independent investigation!  954-693-4851 (Davie); 561-514-0189 (WPB); 202-224-5274 (Washington, DC);

    Thank Representative Ted Deutch for calling for an independent investigation!  561-470-5440 (Boca); 202-225-3001 (Washington, DC);

    Thank Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz for the same!  954-845-1179 (Sunrise); 202-225-7931 (Washington, DC);

    and Thank Representative Lois Frankel for the same!  561-998-9045 (Boca); 202-225-9890 (Washington, DC).

    And thank you for all you do!

    One thing worth noting is that a portion of this meeting will focus on certification (or re-certification, as the case may be) of voter registration volunteers.  Due to some problems that have occurred with a few voter registration efforts in Florida, the Florida Democratic Party wants to ensure that all of its voter registration volunteers have appropriate and up-to-date training so that our registration efforts can continue to properly register or update registrations for voters.   If a volunteer attends this meeting/training, it will enable her/him to keep registering voters as usual.  If you cannot attend this particular meeting, many other training opportunities will be provided around Broward County in the coming weeks.  Ralph Rickel will get us more information on those opportunities.  Please RSVP for this meeting.  Ralph would like me to get a head count so he knows how much pizza to order!  Remember, you can bring friends and family who are interested; just make sure you RSVP for them, too.  Remember, you don’t have to live in Plantation to attend this particular meeting.

    Attached to this message are two pages:  The first is the flyer about the Meeting; the second is a Democratic Party volunteer form that seeks to find out in what ways you would like to assist or what training you would like to get.  Please print the form, complete it, and bring it to the Meeting

    Please let us know if you will be able to join us at this meeting.  Again, it is at 7 PM on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the home of Ralph Rickel, 10791 NW 7 Court in Westport (just west of Nob Hill Road) in Plantation.  You can RSVP to me or to Ralph at the following link:  https://www.facebook.com/events/827485307415257/

    Hope to see you there!
